  • 1515-1547 -- Reign of François Premier (Francis I); flowering of culture with great influence of Italian Renassiance
  • 1562-1598 -- Wars of Religion; 1572 thousands of Protestants are massacred in Paris on St. Bartholomew's Eve
  • 1589-1593 -- Henry IV (Henri IV)becomes the first Bourbon king of France and converts from Protestantism to Catholicism
  • 1643-1715 -- Louis XIV is King; he consolidates power at his palace at Versailles, outside Paris
  • 1756-1763 -- Seven Years War; France loses Canada and other colonial possessions; goes deeper into debt
  • 1789 -- Louis XVI, facing enormous economic crisis is forced to call to session the French Estates General (parliament); the French Revolution begins
